Org. Setting and Reporting

This Internship is located in the United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children (SRSG-VAC). The Internship is for a period of six month. An internship may be terminated by either party, with a notice period of at least two weeks

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns are required to work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member to which they are assigned. The work hours during internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization, the existing study/work commitments and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority the Intern will be required to perform the following:
•Support the development, implementation and monitoring of initiatives to end violence against children;
•Assist in organizing conferences/events and provide support with administrative tasks;
• Draft documents including briefing notes, summaries/action points of internal and external meetings;
• Support the research, collection and synthesizing of qualitative and quantitative information and data for the development of evidence-based advocacy and communication materials in the areas of child rights, child protection, child participation and well as assigned geographic areas.
• Analyze and share specific ideas and new ways to engage with multi stakeholders within and outside the UN system at global, regional and national levels. including through social media platforms and tools Map global influencers across all social media channels - specifically those interested in child rights, child protection, child participation- and identify opportunities to engage and partner with them to end violence against children.
•Assist with the preparation of public information / social media material, presentations and documents to support the evidence based advocacy of the Special Representative; and
•Perform any other functions as requested by the supervisor.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (master or PhD) in political science, international relations, law, human rights, media relations communications, journalism, arts, digital design, social work, behavioral science (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in political science, international relations, law, human rights, media relations communications, journalism, arts, digital design, social work, behavioral science (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) or have graduated within the past two years. Have good academic performance as demonstrated by recent university/education records.

Applicants must also:
• Have proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel);
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Showing a strong interest for children’s rights, child protection, child participation issues is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

Special Notice

Insurance: Interns must have appropriate medical and accident coverage for the given duty station and provide a proof of such insurance to HR along with other required documents prior to commencement of the internship.
Have no immediate relatives working with the UN Secretariat.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
