The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). Together with governments, the agency is responsible for promoting and consolidating collaboration with all partners, including local authorities, and private and non-governmental organizations in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UN-Habitat leads the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), which helps water and sanitation operators help one another. GWOPA is an international network created in 2009 to support operators through Water Operator’s Partnerships (WOPs) – not-for-profit peer support partnerships between water and sanitation operators aimed at enhancing their capacity and performance to provide a better service to more people in support of the SDGs. The GWOPA Secretariat is currently hosted by the Government of Germany.
The internship offers an exciting and vibrant learning environment where candidates will work on current issues facing water and sanitation operators worldwide and explore linkages between capacity development, partnership, and service improvements, especially in low-income urban settings. The internship will also focus specifically on sanitation–focused water operator partnerships, training, and situation analysis in various regions and support utilities scale up sanitation coverage. The intern will be under the supervision of the UN-Habitat, Bonn, Global Solutions Division, Urban Practices Branch, Urban Basic Services Section, Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), Officer-in-Charge.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Bonn, Global Solutions Division, Urban Practices Branch, Urban Basic Services Section, Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) internship is for six (6) months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Officer-in-Charge, the intern will:
Focus on one or more of the following thematic and operational areas of GWOPA:
- Support planning, implementation, and reporting on GWOPA’s projects.
- Knowledge development, documentation, and management of communities of practice.
- Support the preparation of GWOPA global outreach and learning events.
- Support the development and maintenance of GWOPA’s databases on monitoring of WOPs and water operators.
- Support the implementation of the GWOPA’s strategy and Governance Framework(Steering Committee, GWOPA Assembly, GWOPA Membership).
- Support the Project/programme budget and financial management.
Other duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the preparation of draft concept papers, background documents, and position papers;
- Assisting in the development of project concept notes/project briefs and project documents for resource mobilization;
- Performing Data management and analysis;
- Researching pertinent topics related to water and sanitation;
- Assisting in global outreach to mobilize GWOPA membership;
- Assisting in processing and managing GWOPA membership applications;
- Assisting in the preparation, implementation, and follow-up of events, WOP Congress, and workshops;
- Undertaking other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of GWOPA.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Studies in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Environment, and Development Studies are desirable.
Design software skills are desirable.
