Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

The 'Communication, Advocacy and Knowledge Management Section' of UNDRR in Geneva is looking for a Social Media Officer to develop communications products and disseminate on UNDRR social channels.

Responsibilities:

Within limits of delegated authority, the Social Media Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Develops and distribute content in support of World Tsunami Awareness Day.

• Supports the implementation of UNDRR's social media strategy.

• Produces analytics reports on the performance of UNDRR corporate social media channels.

• Develops and maintains UNDRR's social media content calendar.

• Researches, generates, edits and posts contents, text, photos, captions, infographics and short videos on UNDRR social media and corporate websites in support of UNDRR campaigns and overall communication strategy.

• Maintains UNDRR's content asset platforms and files.

• Serves as community manager for UNDRR social media accounts. Monitors and moderates comments on social media posts, intervening as appropriate to answer questions and guide the conversation.

• Provides online communication support for key events and meetings, including featuring related materials on the social media platforms or websites, and live streaming and posting, moderating when appropriate.

• Supports the five UNDRR Regional Offices in the development and maintenance of their regional social media accounts. Regularly reviews social media platforms of regional offices for corporate compliance and provides support on social media best practices.

• Keeps regular contact and liaises with United Nations Headquarters and other United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, vendors and UNDRR partners on topics related to social media and digital campaigning.

• Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

Work implies interaction with the following:

Public information officers, external relations officer and other information management specialists throughout the UNDRR, and outbound correspondence with vendor, other UN agencies, Government offices, Universities and NGOs. Information management staff and managers in user offices and other user clients, including external users (e.g. governments, international organizations, etc.).

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in digital media, communications, journalism or social science is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: At least 2 years of experience in social media management is required.

Experience with social media account management, graphic editing software, video editing software is required.

Experience in managing social media accounts for an international organization is desirable.

Experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change, humanitarian action or international development is desirable.

Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
