Result of Service

Under the supervision of Ms. Claire Healy, Social Affairs Officer, the Research Consultant will be responsible for performing the following tasks:

• Support the team in analyzing quantitative and qualitative data collected by UNODC and its implementing partners within the framework of the project;
• Support the team in conducting regular desk review on migrant smuggling in Southeast Asia;
• Contribute to the production of the communication and dissemination material;
• Support the team in the organisation of field missions and field research work;
• Other research and administrative tasks as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

This assignment is designed in the framework of the research initiative “UNODC Observatory on Smuggling of Migrants”. The Observatory is an online research platform that presents the characteristics, drivers and impacts of migrant smuggling in rapidly changing contexts. The Observatory collects and disseminates data and analysis on the smuggling of migrants. The research is focused on migrant smuggling along routes in North and West Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia. This consultancy falls under the research project “UNODC Observatory on Smuggling of Migrants in Southeast Asia. The project is led by UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) and the Crime Research Section (CRS).

The Research Consultant will support the UNODC Research Branch in the implementation of the project. The activities will be carried out under the direct supervision of the Observatory Coordinator, based in the Crime Research Section at UNODC Headquarters in Vienna.

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Social Sciences, Migration Studies, Political Science, Security Studies or similar is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of 2 years of relevant progressively responsible professional experience in the field of research and/or communication is required.
Experience in the area of migration is highly desirable. Experience with UN organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English, with excellent drafting and communication skills, is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
