Under the overall supervision of Chief Engineer, the Civil Engineer is responsible for the implementation of a broad variety of construction projects including security facilities, horizontal and vertical facilities that are required prior to the occupation of the premises by tenants. The assigned resource will also be the focal point for coordinating facilities maintenance and repair activities once facilities are handed over for occupation.
In particular, the civil engineer will be responsible for the following:
• Plans, schedules and supervises implementation of engineering projects such as:
construction, refurbishment, installation, and maintenance of roads, buildings and camps
• Conducts field visits and prepares assessment of construction interventions:
• Field visits to locations requiring specific technical assistance and, based on performed
assessment, recommend best solution for project implementation
• Preparation of Terms of References (ToR) for detailed design for reconstruction/
rehabilitation of structures where needed
• Reviews and assesses technical design documents for construction interventions;
• Review of technical documentation (geotechnical elaborates, existing and future lay out,
Bill of Quantities (BoQ) with estimation of costs, technical description, design and specific
drawings participate in the evaluation of bids process) for specific projects.
• Review of technical drawings, specifications and Bill of Quantities, geotechnical elaborates
• Assesses requirements for the installation, repairs and maintenance of engineering
equipment and/or buildings and infrastructure. Based on the assessment, drafts technical or
assessment reports; determines work requirements, and issues work orders and work
assignments to assistants and technicians.
• Diagnoses problems and develops solutions for malfunctioning or defective engineering
equipment or systems and/or buildings and infrastructure. Install new electrical networks and
systems in mission.
• Supervises and coordinates the installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of engineering equipment, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and
installation codes.
• Supervises works carried by national, international junior staffs assigned to the team and
contractors in accordance with set schedules. Provides inputs related to their performance.
• Inspects and reports on construction, installation and maintenance projects carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision.
• Applies and ensures adherence to safety programs related to the safe operation of
engineering equipment and power tools.
• Assists in technical evaluation of bids and proposals for engineering projects and equipment.
• Secures equipment, materials, supplies and spare parts for supervised works.
• Reads and interprets specifications and technical drawings for construction, installations and upgrade of infrastructure.
• Reviews and approves work orders and assigns tasks to tradesmen and technicians being
supervised.
• Verifies progress or completion of engineering projects and recommends to the Chief of
Section for partial or final payments.
• Ensure that technical documentation on construction site is maintained in accordance with relevant national laws and standards and contract for works.
• Follows up on correction of defects in material or workmanship of contractor's work during the warranty period of the contracts.
• Conduct routine site visits to the team sites, road/helipad construction project sites in the mission areas and provide engineering controls measures and supervise the quality of construction
• Performs other duties as required.
Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university.
At least eight (08) years of relevant experience after the completion of degree course in the field of civil engineering and construction is required.
At least 2 years of experience in roads design and construction supervision is preferable.
Previous experience in UN peacekeeping or other field operation is desirable.
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of second official UN language is added advantage.
