The ultimate result of this consultancy is to support the ageing and migration teams to deliver according to their workplan.

Duties and Responsibilities

In light of the fast-paced demographic change and unprecedented human mobility, ESCWA has intensified its work on population, ageing and migration to identify key challenges, transboundary issues, and offer innovative policy solutions.
The consultant will be hired to contribute to the above activities - described and will be responsible for the following tasks:

Population
In 2022-2023 ESCWA will organize with UNFPA and the League of Arab States the ICPD Regional Review. The review process will consist of multiple capacity building workshops and stakeholder dialogues and will culminate in a regional conference organized in 2023. In this context the consultant will:
• Prepare concept notes, biographies, list of participants and other documents as needed
• Draft reports of the multistakeholder dialogues organized in preparation for ICPD
• Conduct desk research as required during the ICPD review process.
• Support with project tasks as required.

Migration
• Develop the database on migration policies and ensure it is up to date by compiling all relevant migration policies adopted between Jan 2020 and December 2022 and entering the data into the migration policy database.
• Support drafting chapter 1 of SRIM 2023.
• Support the organization of the migration conference in 2022 as needed.

Ageing
• Map all ageing related policies and develop a database on ageing policies.
• Conduct desk research and quantitative analysis as requested to support the drafting of PDR 10 and elder abuse report.

Overall support
Carry out tasks as requested by project staff to ensure effective and timely delivery of all project's activities.

Qualifications/special skills

A Master’s degree in political science sociology statistics, demography, or related fields is required.

All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
A minimum of ten years of professional experience in the area of statistics and research is required.
Experience in the field of population, ageing and migration is desirable.

Languages

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required and fluency in French is desirable.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
