This position is located in the Engineering Section of the United Nations Mission in South
Sudan (UNMISS), Aweil. Aweil is classified "E" category and is a non-family duty station. The incumbent will report to the Chief Engineer or his/her designate.
• Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings, (roads, bridges, airfields, helipads, railways, docks, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, field defenses, and other related structures and activities in the field.
• Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
• Prepares design layout for complex portions of buildings and facilities.
• Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications.
• Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned projects.
• Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources.
• Liaises with other engineers and mission specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data.
• Undertakes research to gather information related to engineering works.
• Prepares engineering presentations using advances in technologies.
• Serves as Project Manager from Project Mandate/Business Case to Closure of the Project.
• Manage real estate property in accordance with established UN policies and procedures.
• Collect all relevant real estate data of newly constructed structures, categories as per the latest version of IPSAS catalogue, enrich into real estate portfolio management and Asset Register in ECC/Umoja.
• Supervises commercial contractor(s) in implementation of facility maintenance works in wide range, inspects and verifies routine and scheduled maintenances in the camps.
• Perform any other duties as required.
Professionalism: Proven ability to apply engineering skills to develop complex engineering projects, including design, preparation of technical specifications, cost estimates, research of data and preparing graphs. Ability to identify and analyze engineering data of significant depth and complexity. Knowledge of the industry codes and standards. Ability to read and interpret project documents. Proficiency in technical drawing software such as REVIT and AutoCAD. A first-level university degree in Engineering Field (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical) and combined with minimum of four additional years of qualifying experience in the Engineering field is required.
A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related area is required.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
• This position is temporarily available for six (06) months and subject to extension in line with funding availability. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a
temporary assignment.
• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
