Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under guidance of the IPBES Secretariat's Head of Work Programme (Outcome 1 and 2 below) and the IPBES Secretariat's Head of Communications (Outcome 3 below), the Graphic Design Expert will:

1. Lead the design and layout of the assessment report (a) and the summary for policymakers (b) of the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment (IAS);
2. Lead the design and layout of fact sheets for the Sustainable Use of Wild Species Assessment (a); the Values Assessment (b); and the Invasive Alien Species Assessment (c);
3. Lead the design and layout of communications materials for production, mainly in relation with the IPBES 10 Plenary and the media launch of the IAS report, with a few other miscellaneous layout and design requests (e.g., design and layout of several factsheets).

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Graphic Design, Communications, Public Information, Journalism, Marketing or a related field is required. A first-level degree with two additional years of directly relevant experience may be excepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• At least ten years of experience in graphical design work that covers the areas outlined under the roles and responsibilities section;
• Outstanding organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable;
• Outstanding project management skills;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• Experience in working with national or global assessment processes; and
• Knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and/or French is required.
