Duties and Responsibilities

Introduction
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP administers the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of Coastal and Marine Environment of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), under the Ecosystems Division. The Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The Nairobi Convention Secretariat is executing the GEF funded project on the “Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonisation and Institutional Reforms (SAPPHIRE) in coordination with the participating countries and partners both at national and regional level. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – Regional Service Centre for Africa is the implementing agency of the SAPPHIRE project providing oversight in the execution of the project. The main objective of the SAPPHIRE project is to achieve effective long-term ecosystem management in the WIO Large Marine Ecosystems in line with the Strategic Action Programme for sustainable management of the WIO Large Marine Ecosystems as endorsed by the participating countries.

The SAPPHIRE project seeks a consultant to prepare course material and deliver a leadership workshop for senior leaders, officials and policy makers in marine policy and ocean governance. The workshop seeks to empower leaders and promote networking to influence marine policy formulation, decision making and implementation. The workshop contributes to SAPPHIRE’s Outcome 5.1 which seeks to strengthen capacity for improved ocean governance through training and support.

Objective of the Consultancy
To prepare and deliver a leadership workshop for senior leaders, officials and policy makers in marine policy and ocean governance.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Head of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat and the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator of the SAPPHIRE Project, the consultant will be responsible for the following:

1. Develop course material, including a timetable, for the workshop and make them available to the participants.
2. Facilitate the workshop as per the agreed timetable.
3. Prepare a workshop report.

Qualifications/special skills

University degree is required in Business Economics, Management, Commerce, Communication, Psychology, International Development and/or other related disciplines relevant to the assignment.

Professional Experience: A minimum of 4 years working experience is required in leadership development processes, coaching and mentorship is required.

Working knowledge of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region and experience of working with the Governments of the region would be desirable.

Ability to work within very short timelines and with minimum supervision with be added advantage.

Languages

English and French are the official working languages of the United Nations. For this consultancy fluency in oral and written English is required.
