• indicators for setting financial health and inclusion targets for SMEs and MSMEs
• Guidance how to link financial health and inclusion targets with broader SDGs
• Guidance on strengthening signatory banks’ internal human rights due diligence processes and safeguards
• Capacity building support to facilitate effective PRB implementation
• Developing a methodology to benchmark for social topics
• Support to signatories in areas like just transition, gender equality, decent work, and affordable housing

The consultant will also work closely with UNEP FI thematic leads and regional coordinators.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 450 banks, insurers, and investors. For over 30 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards, and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

UNEP FI requires a consultant to deliver implementation support to PRB signatories in social impact areas including financial health and inclusion, decent work, just transition, gender equality and human rights by developing guidance materials on social impact areas and materials for capacity building to strengthen human rights due diligence processes and safeguards within banks.

The consultant will work in tandem with subject matter experts, key stakeholders and Signatory banks to deliver

• Common indicators for setting financial health and inclusion targets for MSME clients
• A methodology for benchmarking financial health & inclusion targets
• Practical guidance on linking financial health & inclusion targets to the wider social SDGs
• Guidance on strengthening Signatory banks’ internal human rights due diligence processes and safeguards
• Capacity building support to facilitate effective PRB implementation
• Implementation support focusing on social impact areas

The consultant will also work closely with UNEP FI thematic leads and regional coordinators.

The consultant will provide assistance in the following project/tasks:

• Provide practical support to banks participating in the Commitment to Financial Health and Inclusion in setting their targets in line with the Commitment
• Work with the relevant Thematic Lead to prepare materials and deliver meetings to support PRB banks with setting targets in social impact areas
• Work with the UNEP FI Social Issues Lead to develop a strategy for delivering support to banks to strengthen their human rights due diligence processes, and roll out capacity building sessions
• Deliver a methodology for benchmarking financial health and inclusion, including the contribution to the SDGs
• Deliver a set of indicators for financial health and inclusion for MSME clients, incl. linkages to the SDGs
• Close coordination with the Banking Team and Regional Coordinators to ensure consistency and streamlined delivery of support at global and regional levels

Outputs and Deliverables
• A set of common indicators for setting financial health and inclusion targets for SME and MSME clients, developed with PRB signatory banks with inputs from key stakeholders
• Monthly meetings with a small group of PRB signatory banks to deliver practical guidance on targets in social impact areas
• A series of workshops and webinars, including peer learning sessions, to facilitate learning and capacity building for strengthening internal human rights due diligence processes and safeguards

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI and will be reporting directly to the Programme Officer responsible for Banking.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: A master’s degree in the following areas: environmental or sustainability studies, economics, business administration, marketing/communications, business development; International relations, administration or finance studies.

Skills & Knowledge: Substantial experience (min. 6 years) and expertise in assessing social and environmental impact. Experience working in/with banks and a good grasp of their different business areas, products & services and internal structure/processes. Expertise in financial health and inclusion, including knowledge of metrics and key performance indicators. Knowledge of human rights and just transition aspects in the banking context would be desirable. Well acquainted with current issues and developments related to sustainable banking globally and regionally. Project management skills required, ideally experience in multi-stakeholder processes. Experience in developing new tools/approaches/guidance materials in collaboration with other experts and stakeholders. Has developed and facilitated structured peer learning programs.

Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, strong interpersonal skills; ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed team working across functions. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable.

Languages

Languages: - Fluent in English, as this is UNEP FI’s working language. Beyond English, fluency in other languages, especially other official UN languages, is highly desirable
