Org. Setting and Reporting

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.

UNICRI' s goals are:
• to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
• to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
• to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; and
• to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This internship is with UNICRI's programme related to illicit financial flows, and the recovery of assets linked to organised criminal activity, corruption and the financing of terrorism. The duration of the internship is for an initial period of two (2) months, with an opportunity of an additional extension for up to a total period of six (6) months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time: five days per week (35 hours) working under the supervision of the relevant Programme Officer.

DISCLAIMER: Currently, UNICRI has active Alternate Working Arrangements in place. This means that UNICRI personnel works in a hybrid modality, both from the premises and in telecommuting. In this context, applicants to this Internship position may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in telecommuting. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking.


Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer (Asset Recovery), the intern will be involved in UNICRI activities concerning the revision of research material related to illicit financial flows and the risks of corruption in Libya, and more in general to the recovery of assets linked to organised criminal activity, corruption and the financing of terrorism. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Prepare draft written translation from English into Arabic and vice-versa of communications and documents as needed;
• Participate in virtual meetings and events to assist with interpretation from English into Arabic and vice-versa;
• Proofread the Arabic translation of reports related to illicit financial flows and the recovery of assets linked to organised crime, corruption and the financing of terrorism, as well as other relevant reports;
• Support in the preparation of anti-corruption awareness raising campaigns in Libya;
• Map civil society organisations active in promoting transparency in the EU Southern Neighbourhood countries;
• Conduct, if needed, any brief follow-up research, as well as obtain national counterpart feedback on issues related to illicit financial flows and asset recovery to help ensure accuracy of information conveyed in Arabic;
• Assist in the identification of national and international stakeholders and media channels (mailing details) for a pertinent and strategic distribution of UNICRI’s messages, particularly for UNICRI’s Arabic messaging (in tone and tactfulness) on sensitive issues;
• Conduct daily monitoring of relevant news and updates from EU Institutions and EU media on relevant thematic areas of intervention to streamline communication and visibility efforts;
• Assist with other communication activities, including the drafting and dissemination of communication material on the available social media channels;¿
• Monitor regional news sources for relevant articles and stories pertinent to the project, programme or unit activities;
• Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, professional reports;
• Support the organization of meetings and conferences, issue briefing notes, talking points, meeting minutes, presentations, etc.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in Studies relevant to the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, communications, translation or other related fields; or
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year or have completed a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Studies relevant to the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or other related fields.

In addition, interested candidates must:
• Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.


Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required for this internship. Good writing skills (reporting/journalistic style), are considered necessary. Knowledge of other official languages of the United Nations is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of Armenian, Azerbaijani, Belarusian, Georgian, Romanian or Ukrainian would also be an asset.
