Background:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Law Division is the lead division charged with carrying out the functions of UNEP in the field of environmental law, governance and related policy issues, including those pertaining to the coherent implemenation of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs).
The consultant will report to the Head, Environment Policy Unit at the Environmental Conventions and Policy Branch of the Law Division and will focus on supporting the activities described hereunder.
Responsibilities:
The consultant will carry out the work assignment below:
1. Review, assess current trigger points for benefit sharing under the digital sequence information (DSI) in CBD, FAO, BBNJ and WHO, as relevant and available.
2. Prepare an analytical report on trigger points for benefit sharing based on the decisions and discussions on benefit sharing elements under the DSI
3. Include in the above report, such benefit sharing triggers for consideration by stakeholders focusing on issues of BBNJ, WHO pandemic treaty and FAO discussions on DSI and benefit sharing.
4. Prepare one presentation on the key elements of the above reports.
A Bachelor’s degree in environment, humanities, management, social sciences, related fields is required.
Proven expertise in working on issues of benefit sharing, CBD and DSI related policy issues.
At least 4 years of experience in dealing with CBD, benefit sharing MEAs, policy related issues.
Experience in DSI and benefit sharing issues
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat., fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
Output 1: Review of benefit sharing triggers under the Nagoya Protocol.
Deliverable: Review completed and submitted.
Output 2: Report on trigger points for benefit sharing under the DSI discussions of CBD.
Deliverable: Final reports prepared and submitted
Output 3: Report on trigger points for benefit sharing in the context of discussions under BBNJ, FAO and WHO discussions/negotiations.
Deliverable: Presentation prepared.
Output 4: Presentation as above.
