The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The post is located in the English Interpretation Unit, Interpretation Section, Division of Conference Services (UNON).
Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Interpretation Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:-
1. Servicing up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies.
2. English, French, Russian or Spanish interpreters provide interpretation, as required, into an official language of speeches or statements given in two other official languages. Arabic or Chinese interpreters provide interpretation into Arabic or Chinese of speeches given in a UN official language and interpretation into English or French – as appropriate – of speeches given in Arabic or Chinese.
3. May occasionally be assigned to sensitive meetings. 4. May function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. 5. Perform other related duties as required.

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for English Interpreters.
A minimum of two years of internationally recognized professional interpreting experience.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Excellent aural comprehension and command of French and Russian is also necessary. Knowledge of an additional official language is an asset.
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
