Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. This position is located in the SLCI (Sustainable Lifestyles, Cities and Industries) Branch of UNEP/DTIE at the Paris duty station. The Sustainable Lifestyles, Cities and Industry (SLCI) Branch of UNEP/DTIE focuses on achieving increased understanding and implementation of sustainable consumption and production by decision makers and practitioners in public and private sectors. Under the day to day supervision of the two Programme Officers, and under the general guidance and supervision of the Head of the Responsible Industry and Value Chain Unit, the incumbent is responsible for:

Responsibilities

1. Support activities and programmes to enhance implementation of environmental innovation along supply chains including projects such as the EC supported “Resource Efficiency and Eco-Innovation in Developing and Transition Economies” This will include the following;

- Carry out basic research on eco-innovation related information (experts, events, similar initiatives and tools), including through literature and internet, and ensuring that information gathered is collected, analyzed and presented.
- Support the development and implementation of survey initiatives that help focus project activities at regional and national level,
- Undertake outreach and ongoing support activities.
- Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs.
- Supporting activities and the elaboration of documents related to project funding and fund-raising.

2. Assist in the operation of activities and projects within the framework of the Unit’s contribution to the Resource Efficiency Expected Accomplishment (RE EA) sub-programme (b) of the Programme of Work 2016 - 2017. This will include the following;

- Undertake outreach activities related to project work along value and supply chains ensuring the linkages with other related UNEP sub-programmes.
- Support the coordination for the Unit’s work in the area of eco-innovation and sustainable products, as emerging from the Unit’s activities in this area.
- Contribute to efforts to strengthen the Unit’s capacity to measure business performance, including contributing to the preparation of various written outputs.
- Provide administrative and substantive support to consultative meetings and business and eco-innovation-focused events.
- Contribute to the activities related to cooperation with other international and inter-governmental organizations in joint activities related to resource efficient production.

3. Support activities on outreach, communication and information requests. This will include the following;

- Undertake outreach activities related to Unit’s broader activities.
- Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs such as related web-based information sharing platforms.
- Support the linkages between the Unit’s work streams and the activities undertaken in other DTIE.
- Support the development of related Unit publications ensuring that communication products are in line with UNEP guideline and to the preparation of briefings.

4. Provide relevant support for the effective and integrated implementation of the Unit’s other activities under the work areas on corporate sustainability reporting, sectoral initiatives addressing sustainability along value chains, and Safer and Responsible Production.

5. Performs other related duties as required.

Planning and organization: Ability to identify priority activities and assignments, allocation of appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Experience in administrative work is required (preparing briefing notes, meeting reports and managing budgets).

Education

An advanced relevant degree (Masters degree or equivalent) in public administration, economics, environmental policy, environmental or chemical engineering, environmental economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in Environmental programme/project management or related area. International experience is desirable. Knowledge of the RECP network and the UN system is an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised , fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
