Special Notice

The internship is UNPAID. All costs of travel and accommodation, including living expenses, must be covered by the intern or any relevant sponsoring institution. Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship in the International Trade and Integration Division will last 2 to 6 months, depending on the needs of the Division/Section. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting
period, on an "as-needed" basis. Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) in the Division/Section to which they are assigned, but they may undertake flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions.

The mission of ECLAC in International Trade and Integration is to generate and disseminate analyses and policy proposals aimed at strengthening the participation of the Latin American and Caribbean region in global trade and fostering regional integration, particularly as it relates to economic matters. To this end, ECLAC produces studies and publications, organizes conferences and seminars, provides technical assistance to governments and integration bodies in the region, and develops and maintains a range of databases. The work of the International Trade and Integration Division covers quantitative and qualitative aspects of both themes, through coordination with other ECLAC divisions and national and subregional offices.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes supporting the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

The intern will be under supervision of an Economic Affairs Officer

Daily duties may include:
Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents
Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
Document, legal and internet research
Compiling statistics

Education

Undergraduate or graduate studies in economics, international relations, law or statistics is desirable.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

Work Experience

No work experience is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
Knowledge of English is required.
Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
