Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Russian Language Translation and Text Processing Section (RTTS), Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The Chief of Section reports to the Deputy Chief and Chief of the Conference Management Service.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following duties:

• Organizes the translation, revision and related activities of the Russian Translation and Text Processing Section to ensure prompt delivery of documents of appropriate quality and quantity.
• Supervises, monitors and evaluates the performance of all regular and temporary staff in the Section.
• Oversees the day-to-day and long-term planning of work in the light of workload projections, including the appropriate recruitment of temporary staff.
• Makes recommendations to the Chief of Service on policy matters relating to his/her Section, including appointment, promotion and training.
• Adjudicates between competing demands on the Section’s services, where necessary.
• Liaises with other sections and units to ensure optimum coordination.
• Encourages the introduction and use of modern technologies with a view to enhancing the efficiency of the documents workflow and use of CAT tools, as appropriate.
• Acts as final arbiter on matters of language and terminology.
• Serves on examination boards for the recruitment of translators.
• Acts as Deputy for the Chief, CMS, as required.

Education

Advanced degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status, or equivalent qualifications. Candidates must have passed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination (LCE) for Russian Translators.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in translation and revision and/or in the provision of language or language-related services, preferably within the United Nations. Significant language-related management experience in international, regional or national institutions.

Languages

Perfect command of Russian together with an excellent knowledge of English and at least one other official language of the United Nations.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
