Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is the intergovernmental body which assesses the state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society. Established in 2012 in Panama, IPBES has a current membership of 124 governments and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. One thousand scientists from all over the world currently contribute to the work of IPBES on a voluntary basis. They are nominated by their government or an organisation, and selected by the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel. Peer review forms a key component of the work of IPBES to ensure that a range of views is reflected in its work, and that the work is complete to the highest scientific standards.

IPBES is placed under the auspices of four United Nations entities: UNEP, UNESCO, FAO and UNDP. Its secretariat is hosted by the German government and located on the UN campus, in Bonn, Germany.

Internship-specific background:
In its decision IPBES-3/1, the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services approved the undertaking of a thematic assessment on land degradation and restoration in 2015 for consideration by the Plenary at its sixth session (2018). This expert-led assessment will provide the information and guidance necessary to support stakeholders working at all levels to reduce the negative environmental, social and economic consequences of land degradation and to rehabilitate and restore degraded land to aid the recovery of nature’s benefits to people. It will draw on information from scientific, indigenous and local knowledge systems to increase awareness and identify areas of concern. It will help to identify potential solutions to the challenges posed by land degradation, informing decision makers in public, private and civil society sectors. It will provide a framework for understanding, monitoring and taking action to halt and reverse land degradation in order to support decision-making at all levels and it will identify critical knowledge gaps and priority areas for new research and investment to enhance capacity in the sustainable management of land and biodiversity and their benefits to people.

The assessment is coordinated by Technical Support Unit (TSU) hosted by IPBES Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. A team of LDRA is comprised of 2 Co-Chairs, 80 authors, and 16 Review Editors, who were chosen by the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, in accordance with rules and procedures of the Platform.

The UNEP Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment internship is for 3-6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

The successful candidate will be under direct supervision of the Coordinator for Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment. The coordinator will be always available to guide the candidate and answer any question; however, ability to work in fast-paces environments (with minimal supervision) is key to this position. Specific activities, tasks and responsibilities would include:
•Assist in facilitating the overall implementation of the Assessment via continuous monitoring, follow up, regular coordination with experts;
•Work in close collaboration with TSU of LDRA to ensure follow through of an implementation plan including clear milestones, deadlines and roles and responsibilities of all involved;
•Keep abreast ongoing and planned initiatives related to the issues of land degradation;
•Assist experts in delivering their work, including by compiling and editing material for the assessment draft reports and the internal reviews of the various draft reports;
•Assist in coordination and follow up with other IPBES Deliverables to ensure consistency and harmonization of key messages and compliance with the IPBES Conceptual Framework (setting up regular conference calls with TSUs of other Regional Assessments, Task Forces of Scenario Assessment, and ILK group);
•Assist in ensuring that the necessary guidance components for experts are in place (i.e. copyright waivers, style guides, graphics design, etc.);
•Develop and/or maintain up to date collaborative tools and platforms depending on the need of experts, and devise guidance notes (or webinars) to assist those with further questions and difficulties;
•Support the relevant Assessment-related meetings (i.e. Second Authors Meeting in August 2016);

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study :
Studies in land management or environment related degree preferred. Applicants who have carried out environmental management/sustainable land management related research studies (thesis) are desirable.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
