Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The UN-Habitat – Research and Capacity Building Branch internship is for 3-6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

The internship offers an exciting and vibrant learning environment for the intern due to the close linkage between the knowledge development, training and skill development resulted from the close synergies between the Capacity Development Unit (CDU) and the other units and products of the Research and Capacity Development Branch such as the State of the World Cities Report, and the global urban indicators programme held by the Global Urban Observatory.

The intern will report directly to one professional staff of the CDU and work under the overall supervision of the chief of the CDU.

The intern will support the work one or more following thematic and operational areas of the CDU:
1.UN-Habitat’s partnership with universities worldwide (Habitat UNI)
2.Training programmes related to urban and urbanization issues in partnership with the International Urban Training Centre (IUTC), Province of Gangwon, SouthKorea
3.Technical assistance on a project for accountability systems in Latin America (Spanish speakers), through monitoring the progress of SDG11 “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”
4.Development and implementation of other training programmes in substantive areas of work of UN-Habitat, including development of training support materials and documentation of case studies;
5.Communication and knowledge management for better information dissemination and utilization.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting in gathering information and drafting project concept notes, background documents and research proposals, under supervision and guidance from professional staff
• Draft message and communication material for Habitat UNI;
•Assist with communication and information management, establishing connections between academia/research partners, internal colleagues, training institutions, etc.;
• Assist with the management of websites and drafting of newsletters;
• Assist in the processes of planning and marketing of training courses;
•Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of the Capacity Development Unit; and
• Assist in information management, documentation and substantive support to the functioning of CDU.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study:
Enrolled in a master’s programme relating to urban development, urban environment, communications, development studies or similar.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
