Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) was established in 1997 in Fukuoka, Japan. The Office serves countries in the Asia and Pacific region to implement the Habitat Agenda and to advocate for the New Urban Agenda 2016-2036. Currently UN-Habitat ROAP implements projects in 21 countries. Countries with UN-Habitat Offices include: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. UN-Habitat further has a liaison office in Bangkok with Thematic priorities and for development partner liaison. The responsibilities of UN-Habitat ROAP, the Country Offices and the Bangkok office, cover many aspects of human settlement development, combining operational activities (responding to government requests to develop and technically support innovative projects and programmes), as well as developing and field-testing normative activities (advocating increased support to the urban sector, as well as documenting and sharing good practices for policy guidance, and campaigning for Sustainable Urbanization).

The UN-HABITAT Programme Management -Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.’

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

The intern will report directly to one professional staff of Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific , or the Bangkok or the Country Office and work under the overall supervision of the Director of the Office where the intern is placed.

The intern will focus his/her work on one or more of the following thematic and operational areas of Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific:
- Support to country level and sub-regional programmes
- Cities and Climate Change Initiative
- Global Land Tools Network
- People’s Process of Settlement Development
- Participatory Slum Upgrading Project
- Habitat III / Post 2015 Development Agenda
- Support to UN-Habitat inclusion in UNDAFs
- Project/Programme Financial Management

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the preparation of draft concept papers, background documents, position papers;
- Assist in the development of project concept notes/project briefs and project documents for resource mobilization;
- Search for funding calls for expression of interest;
- Assist with communication and information management, establishing connections between county-level and regional partners and internal colleagues, etc.;
- Assist with the management of websites and drafting of newsletters;
- Assist in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of regional workshops in Asia and the Pacific,
- Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study:
Studies in Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Environment, Communications/Journalism, Business/Accounting and Development Studies are preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
