Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Interpretation Section (IS), Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will report to the Chief, Interpretation Section.

Responsibilities

Within assigned authority, the Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

•Provide Interpretation into Arabic of speeches and statements given in English and/or French.

•Service up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of the United Nations and other international organizations to which the service is provided.

•Routinely cover sensitive and highly technical meetings.

•Routinely function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.

•May instruct and advise interpreter trainees.

•May perform other related duties, as required.

Education

A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status, preferably a recognized school of interpreting. (Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Interpreters.)

Work Experience

At least five years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations. Relevant language experience within the United Nations System may be taken into consideration in meeting the requirements of this post.

Languages

A perfect command of Arabic and excellent command of English and/or French.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
