Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between states. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival (www.cites.org). The CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is located at the Geneva duty station. For this post, the Research Assistant will provide assistance within the team for the development, maintenance and updating of databases, administration of projects, preparation of documentation for, and the organisation of conferences and meetings using English, French and Spanish. Under the supervision of the Chief Scientific Services Team (SST), he/she will perform the following duties;

Responsibilities

1. Develop, maintain and update the Team's databases.
• Research, extract and compile basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
• Sort, consolidate, extract and process data and enter into relevant database.
• Assist in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
• Assemble original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
• Assist in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
• Assist in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
• Prepare a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
• Review, store, classify, and maintain relevant computerized databases.

2. Assist in the preparation and organization of meetings of the CITES Conference of the Parties, Standing Committee, Animals/Plants Committees and workshops related to implementation of the programme of work.
• Take notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings
• Serves as focal point for administrative coordination on specific meetings and project implementation activities undertaken by the team, involving liaison with a diverse organizational units to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, process and follow-up on administrative actions, e.g. recruitment and appointment of personnel, travel arrangements, training/study tours, authorization of payments, disbursement of funds, procurement of equipment and services, etc.
• Prepare abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
• Collect, organize and disseminate relevant UN and media information.

3. Support to the scientific team and other duties as assigned:
• Provides general office assistance for the team; responds to complex information requests and inquiries; reviews, logs and routes incoming correspondence; sets up and maintains files/records; handles routine administrative tasks, such as travel arrangements for workshops and meeting.
• Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff
• Performs other related work as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates MUST have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) or the Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices away from Headquarters

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social, economic and environmental development or related area is required. Working experience in an office support functions using MS Office software in an international setting is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages for the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in written and oral English is required. Proficiency in one of the other working languages of the Convention (French and /or Spanish) is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
