Cadre organisationnel

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division. Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service. This internship is located within the Economic Governance and Planning Section, Economic Development and Integration Division (EDID) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Economic Governance and Planning Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of EDID.

Responsabilités

Responsibilities of the internship position encompass all aspects of the work of the section and, in general, of EDID's work. The intern will be involved in carrying out the following tasks, for example: 1. Conducts research and reference searches on issues relating to economic governance, economic development, institution-building, political economy and EDID's general areas of work; 2. Compiles, processes and works with socioeconomic databases derived from a variety of sources; 3. Supports drafting of inputs to presentations, project documents and research papers as well as supports the organization of meetings; 4. Surveys and prepares reports on the economic and social policy environment in the region; 5. Performs other duties assigned.

Technological Awareness - Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology. Proficient in MS office applications and analytical software (e.g. STATA).

Formation

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme: 1. Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship in any of the following areas: economics, social sciences, development studies, public administration and governance, or statistics; 2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.3. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA's programme of work and administration.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required.
Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
