Cadre organisationnel

This internship is located in the New York Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The incumbent will report to the Senior Gender Adviser and head of the Section.

The OCHA Internship is for a minimum duration of two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).

Administrative requirements:

Candidates must be medically insured; able to obtain necessary visas and arrange travel to UNHQ, as well as cover the cost of travel, accommodation and living expenditure for the duration of the internship. Responsabilités

Humanitarian Affairs- Gender Equality:

• In consultation with the Senior Gender Adviser, assist in the design and preparation of contextual gender and Gender Based Violence (GBV) profiles for various humanitarian, disaster, emergency relief and related gaps in various follow-up activities.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues with a particular focus on gender equality and prioritizes such analysis for sharing with a Community of Practice and other gender platforms.
• Assists to manage and moderate the gender Community of Practice and updating the gender page on OCHA NET and the gender focal point network.
• Assists in the organization of gender specific meetings, trainings, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. with OCHA branches, agencies and partners to facilitate exchanges of professional expertise and views on thematic gender issues; and serves as reporter to such events.
• Contributes to the preparation of various written documents on gender equality, e.g. concept notes, drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents etc.
• Develops and maintains reference/resource information/gender profiles/databases on specific themes; responds to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally.
• Assists in the production of appeals for international assistance; ensures the proper use and spending of donor contributions channelled through OCHA.
• Maintains awareness of current humanitarian affairs and related issues, to include relevant political, policy, gender considerations or other developments in specific subject area, country or region concerned.
• Participates in technical assistance, disaster assessment or other missions.
• Participates in project/programme formulation and mobilization of relevant resources.
• Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Information- Good practices:

• Tracks, researches and analyses information from the field on gender and Gender Based Violence and documents lessons, good practices and challenges to help in building evidence, implementation and capacity strengthening
• Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, etc.
• Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research.
• Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initials drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
• In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
• Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
• Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
• Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Compétences

Ability to identify issues, analyse and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to develop sources and conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, work under pressure. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Formation

Applicants must be enrolled in a Bachelor's (final year), Post graduate, Master's or Ph.D.
programme or equivalent, preferably in political science, social science, international studies,
public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or related field or a related
field. Applicants that have successfully completed an academic programme in a discipline
mentioned above must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants are not required to have professional working experience for participation in the
internship program, though any academic and/ or practical experience in humanitarian affairs issues including humanitarian financing mechanisms, humanitarian funding trends, gender equality programming, emergency preparedness, crisis/ emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development and/ or human rights is desirable. Applicants should be computer
literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the
United Nations, a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and; have a demonstrated
ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs,
which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this
internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an
asset. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an advantage.

The internship within the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, in line with the
United Nations (UN) Internship Programme, aims to provide a framework by which students
