Org. Setting and Reporting

The Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD) is seeking 2 (two) interns. The positions are located in the office of the Environmental Sustainability Manager in FCSD, Office of the Central Support Service, Department of Management. FCSD is made up of two services: the Facilities Management Service (FMS) which provides, inter alia, building and waste management services, and the Commercial Activities Service (CAS) which provides, inter alia, cafeteria and catering services. The FCSD internship is for six (6) months. The internships are UNPAID and full time. Interns work 5 days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the section to whom they are assigned.


The interns will be given responsibilities that will assist their learning and experience in data gathering/management/reporting and practical aspects of environmental sustainability management in a large and complex organization. Under the supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Manager, and within delegated authority, the interns will assist in the following duties:• Contribute to the development of an environmental management system (EMS) in line with ISO 14,001 standards for the operations and facilities management at the UN Secretariat in New York; • Contribute to the completion of an initial environmental review of the UN Secretariat’s operations and facilities management; •Contribute to preparing the annual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory for the UN Secretariat in New York (buildings, travel and transport); •Assist in providing secretariat services to the Steering Group on Environmental Sustainability of the UN Secretariat, including by assisting in implementing decisions of the Steering Group, preparing reports and other documents for Steering Group meetings and researching relevant information and presenting data using Excel and Power Point, among other softwares; •Assist in the development of sustainability communication campaigns; and •Other related duties, as required.

Technological Awareness: -Keeps abreast of available technology; -Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; -Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; -Shows willingness to learn new technology.


To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation. 2. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications, including MS Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel). 3. Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations. 4. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.


Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
