Duties and Responsibilities

Organization Setting:

UN Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
UN Environment’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
The consultant will work for the Ecosystem Services Economics Unit in the Ecosystems Division to perform the execution of different work packages of The Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB) projects, and specifically on the IKI funded project “TEEB Implementation: Supporting Biodiversity and Climate friendly Land Management in Agricultural Landscapes”. The consultant will report to the Chief, Ecosystem Services Economics Unit (ESE) in the Ecosystems Division. This position will be based in Geneva.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The UN Environment TEEB initiative will implement the “Supporting Biodiversity and Climate friendly Land Management in Agricultural Landscapes project. Duties and responsibilities of the consultant will focus on technical and managerial support to the project implementation in Colombia and Thailand. Specific duties include the following:

a) The consultant will carry out background research on selected aspects of the TEEB Country Implementation project, to include reviewing, analysing and presenting country-specific information and data on the policy context, biophysical assessments and economic valuation;
b) Contribute to the development of scenarios to be used for policy assessment and the assessment of the constituency of stakeholders affected by the changes in ecosystems/ecosystem service provisioning
c) Review outputs from the projects and provide feedback to country focal points.
d) Work together with the Communications Team and the country focal points to develop the outreach materials and ensure the dissemination of project results to the Steering Committees and implementing partners;
e) Liaise with country stakeholders to facilitate the discussion and coordinate the policy relevance of the work and carry out evaluation functions;
f) Contribute to the preparation of and revise the final versions of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.;
g) Organize and participate in field missions.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree in Economics or Environmental Sciences or related field is required. A first level degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience working in the UN system and/or other multilateral organizations.
• Fully computer literate (Microsoft Office, Internet) in preparation and delivery of presentations and efficient information materials
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong analytical, drafting and reporting abilities
• Project Management desirable
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Oral and written English is required and Spanish is highly desirable.
