Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located at the General Maintenance Shop, the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD), Office of Central Support Services (OCSS), Department of Management. The incumbent reports to the Foreman of the Shop and the General Foreman of MAU.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the General Foreman of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit and the Foreman of the General Maintenance Shop, Plant Engineering Section, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties: Construct metal and sheetrock (dry wall) partitions • Install floor tiles • Erect metal partitions and doors • Assemble chairs, tables, shelving units, detach, attach and hang pictures for offices, work areas, conference rooms and supply rooms, etc., as part of the building maintenance throughout the UNHQ Complex and offsite leased premises • On occasion, build stages for UN events • Repair cracks on walls and ceilings, including pavements • Install ceramic tiles, marble and flagstone; and work with block, brick, and glass • Move heavy materials such as sand-stone-gravel and take charge of masonry work; and • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Foreman and General Foreman.

Education

High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive working experience in the area of general building construction and maintenance services is required. Experience in the use of tools and equipment required for this trade is required. Experience performing construction of metal and sheetrock (drywall) partitions, door installations and rough carpentry is required. Experience performing light masonry, including flooring, wall and tile repairs is required. Experience performing installation and removal of commercial office partitions is desirable. Experience reading construction blueprints and plans is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a written technical test which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
