Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Delivery Management Team of Umoja in the Department of Management in New York. The Information Systems Officer (SAP Travel) reports to the Senior Information Systems Officer in the Human Capital Management and Travel team.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Information Systems Officer, the Information Systems Officer (SAP Travel) will be responsible for the support and configuration of the Travel processes in Umoja’s SAP solution as well as their integration with other SAP modules such as Human Capital Management (HCM), Payroll (PY), Finance, Funds and Grants Management.

In the context of the Process improvements work plan for the ERP Project during 2017/2018, the Information System Officer post will also support the ongoing enhancement of Umoja's travel solution on an end-to-end cycle basis, including design, coding, testing, upgrade implementation, and optimisation fixes. The position will lead Umoja's production support Tier 3 services in respect of Umoja's Travel solution.

The Information Systems Officer will be responsible for the following:

(a) Based on approved business requirements, performs complex analysis of business problems to be technically solved within the SAP solution from an end-to-end cycle perspective, including pre-blue print analysis, design and configuration as well as systemic fixes and/or enhancements required by approved process changes.
(b) Provides expert technical and functional advice to the Umoja management team on the various aspects and process requirements in said areas, including in respect of root causes and scenarios for technical fixes of current process and future developments.

(a) Along with the Delivery Management and Finance teams, provides expert advice in respect of the design and implementation of required integration of Umoja's Travel processes with PY, PA, NPO and Finance processes [FA, FM, GM, Project Systems, CO and TR] to make sure all workflows are consistent across the solution for production.
(b) As focal point, tracks and monitors the on-going resolution and development of the integration of Umoja’s Travel solution.

(a) Actively contributes to the development, review and validation of test scripts and test scenarios for all phases of testing in respect of the above processes, including Unit Testing, Functional Acceptance Testing, Product Integration Testing, Payroll Parallel Testing and User Verification Testing, providing direction and support to the process experts during the test execution and defect resolution phases.
(b) In collaboration with the rest of Umoja's teams, acts as focal point concerning the releases by SAP of relevant OSS Notes, Support and Enhancement packs, and/or upgrades, ensuring effectiveness and alignment to the solution's architecture, overseeing the related testing, including liaising with SAP in respect of process requirements, identified defects and follow-up resolutions.

(a) Oversees the cutover planning, cutover testing and other deployment activities, including system build activities, transition procedures, data cleansing and data migration.
(b) Monitors, analyses, resolves and documents post Go-Live at the Tier3 level (defects, enhancement requests, impact and risk assessment of identified problems and requested changes).
(c) Identifies, tracks and monitors project issues and risks, and provides expert advice on resolution and/or mitigation plans to address the identified items.

Develops standards, procedures and practices and documents all aspects of the integrated solution, reviews business design documents, functional specification documents, key design documents, user documentation, training materials, instructions and procedures.


• Professionalism: Knowledge of systemic developments of workflow and processes for SAP Travel, HCM, Payroll, Travel applicable to NPO and Finance is required, including analysis, design, programming and configuration. Knowledge of Travel policies and processes in the United Nations. Knowledge of several high level programming languages and significant exposure to and demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of programming and analysis, including structured/object-oriented design, relational systems, scripting and query languages, document design and management, hardware and software requirements, systems facilities and execution protocols. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, to include proficiency in the development and implementation of systems of moderate size/complexity. Knowledge of interactive systems; good knowledge of organization’s information infrastructure and IT strategy as it relates to user area(s); independently maintains assigned systems and develops innovative approaches to resolve a wide range of issues/problems. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in information systems, engineering or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. SAP certifications in Travel and Finance are required.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the complete life cycle of an ERP/SAP implementation, including planning, design, build development, deployment and production support maintenance is required. Experience with writing specifications, configuring, implementing, testing and subsequent production support for Travel and with SAP HCM modules, particularly Payroll and NPO Benefits/Entitlements, is also required. Experience should include integration of Payroll, NPO and Travel with the SAP Finance processes. SAP Certifications such as SAP HCM, SAP Public Sector, SAP Integration are required. ITIL, PMP or any professional project certification are desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
