Org. Setting and Reporting

The Department of Safety and Security (DSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the security programmes and activities of the United Nations System. The advertised position is located in the UNDSS Communications Centre, Division of Regional Operations (DRO). The UNDSS Communications Centre is collocated with the UN Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC). The UNDSS Communications Centre provides 24/7 communications services for United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) member organisations, Designated Officials for Security, and UNDSS field offices. This post reports to the Senior Operations Assistant within the UNDSS Communications Centre.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Operations Assistant, the incumbent will join the 24/7 shift system of the UNDSS Communications Centre, and be responsible for the following: to evaluate and disseminate information and reports received from the field; to alert Regional Desks and DSS senior managers to threats and security developments affecting UN Security Management System (UN SMS) Organizations; to coordinate and provide communications services to DSS HQ, UNSMS Organisations and UN field security offices on a continuous basis and function as an information hub; to support DSS Regional Desks and the DSS Crisis Manager during crisis situations, including the recording of crisis related information and documents, and provision of crisis communications assistance to ensure efficient coordination between DSS HQ, DSS field offices and UNSMS organisations; to maintain records and databases in support DRO operations and to satisfy information requirements of UNSMS organisations; to coordinate information collection and collate input for regular reports compiled by DSS; to assist the Division of Regional Operations in special projects and programmes; to perform other assignments as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

At least seven years of experience in an administrative, communications, security or related function is required. Working experience in a function directly supporting the United Nations, or other similar large international organization, Security Management System is desirable. Experience working in or with a situation/operations centre is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
