Duties and Responsibilities

UN Environment is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UN Environment’s Economy Division works with governments, non-governmental organizations, and business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are enhance people’s well-being, are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, and reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment. Over the past years, UN Environment has broadened its work on sustainable consumption and production to cover the potential that individual targeted efforts can contribute to the sustainable development agenda. Known as sustainable lifestyles, this work links efforts across the organization (including the regions) in the areas of food, tourism, mobility, leisure and cities, all of which can contribute to addressing the broader pollution agenda, climate change and health. Based on emerging evidence, experts have noted a core challenge is to enhance awareness of and to develop a common understanding and actions on what are sustainable lifestyles.

The focus of the consultancy is to support the sustainable lifestyles activities located in the Consumption and Production Unit in Paris, France. These activities seek to develop: a common vision, awareness and understanding; tools, approaches and materials that communicate and pilot related initiatives at urban level and contribute to dialogues to shift individual behaviour towards sustainability. The Consumption and Production Unit's work on sustainable lifestyles contributes to various 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) including: Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (SLE); Sustainable Food Systems and Consumer Product Information. The SLE Multi-Stakeholder Committee meeting, to be held in November 2017 will operationalise the programmes work for 2018-9 to which the consultant will contribute. Other 10YFP Programmes may also be supported. For example the Sustainable Food Systems Programme has communication and messaging activities planned for 2018 and providing technical support is anticipated.

Aim of the consultancy work
Under the supervision of Sustainable Lifestyles Programme Officer of the Consumption and Production Unit, the consultant will provide support to the sustainable lifestyles work stream, especially contributing the development, communication and dissemination of core sustainable lifestyle messaging drawn from research and project support. The consultant will work full time for a period of 6 months and be office based.
The consultant will support research and analysis of lifestyle activities (including compiling of messaging and communication means) and support the road testing of (urban) approaches to promoting sustainable lifestyles in Bogota and Marrakesh and related efforts in UN Environment’s regional offices. Specifically, the consultant will support 2 projects funded by the 10YFP SLE Programme that promote more sustainable lifestyles in youth (Bogota) and in the workplace (Bogota and Marrakesh) and a broader corporate communication effort (with regional inputs) that will feed into related high level events such as side events at the High Level Political Forum (New York, July 2018). The consultant will support and take a lead role in 1) researching existing urban lifestyle initiatives (in the domains of food, mobility, housing, and leisure which includes tourism and consumer goods) to contribute to a menu of urban lifestyle initiatives that will also support project activities in Bogota and Marrakesh; 2) compiling information and on current lifestyle impacts (costs associated with (multiple) domains at macro and national levels); 3) drafting text on lifestyles activities for reporting and monitoring efforts such as those by the 10YFP Secretariat and Programmes; 4) supporting drafting of concept notes and engagement of speakers for events and 5) supporting wider dissemination of the lifestyles work stream including factsheets, text drafting contributing to Unit, Branch and Division lifestyle messaging (including other Divisions such as Communications or Ecosystems), power point presentations and resource mobilization efforts.
