Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship with the Human Security Unit, located in New York, is for a duration of three months. Depending on the needs of the unit and upon satisfactory performance of the intern, there is an possibility for extension for another three months. The total duration of the entire internship period is six months at maximum. Under no circumstances will there be extension beyond six months.

The internship is unpaid. All costs associated with this internship (including travel to the duty station, accommodation, living expenses, medical insurance, visa application fees, etc.) will have to be borne by the intern.

The internship is full time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the unit to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist the Human Security Unit in undertaking research and developing strategies for the short, medium and long term outreach and resource mobilization, as well as in strengthening communication platforms, particularly social media:
-Assist in the analysis of ODA funding streams and requirements;
-Select from scientific literature information relevant to HSU;
-Support for HSU activities;
-Assist in preparation of outreach strategies of promotional/advocacy materials for HSU;
-Develop and maintain up-to-date public information strategy of the HSU;
-Assist in maintaining HSU’s website;
-Assist in expanding HSU’s presence on Social Media;
-Assist staff in supporting the implementation of relevant public events;
-Maintain an up-to-date list of contact addresses, publication distribution lists.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
-Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents;
-Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings;
-Document, legal and Internet research;
-Assistance during conferences;
-Logistics and protocol support for office events;
-Working on web-presentation;
-Social Media posts;
-Evaluation of projects;
-Compiling statistics (in graphs, pie-charts, etc.);
-Media analysis;
-Compiling news headlines from member states;
-Compiling donor briefings;
-Speech-writing;
-Translation support for outreach materials;
-Support for the production of HSU newsletter;
-Support for HSU activities;
-Country/ donor analyses;
-Report writing.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year of graduation.

Work Experience

Applicants:
-are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;
-be computer literate in all standard software applications;
-have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
-have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand;
-be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Assessment
