The selected candidate will occasionally be required to perform evening and night shifts, including weekends on rotation, in order to perform assignments that require off-hours or an emergency response.

Physical Requirements: Lifting and carrying around 80 lbs on one's shoulder while walking and kneeling for long periods of time are necessary and a daily requirement to complete the job.

Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Carpet Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD), Office of Central Support Services (OCSS), Department of Management. The incumbent reports to the Foreman of the Carpet Shop.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Foreman of the Carpet Shop, the Carpet Installer is responsible for installation, repair and maintenance of carpets, tiles and flooring throughout the UN complex and offsite leased premises. Conduct periodic inspections of carpets, tiles and flooring. Responsible for the upkeep of existing carpets including patching, stretching and repairing as required. Keep records of time spent and materials used on jobs. Perform other duties as required.

Education

High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive experience as a skilled craftsman in the field of general building maintenance, installation and repair of carpets, tiles and flooring, or a related area, is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other official UN language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a written/Technical test assessment, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
