Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Publications and Editorial Section in the Outreach Division, Department of Public Information. The Publications and Editorial Section is a source of authoritative information and informed debate on the driving concerns and main activities of the United Nations. Its flagship reference works and popular products are aimed at all people seeking to know more about the Organization and the global issues that it confronts. The incumbent of the post reports to the Chief Editor of the Yearbook of the United Nations.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief Editor of the Yearbook of the United Nations, the incumbent is responsible for:

- Selecting content, organizing, analyzing and writing Yearbook chapter manuscripts on the basis of United Nations official documentation and in accordance with Yearbook guidelines and standards for accuracy, political balance, cohesion, completeness, conciseness and objectivity;

- Editing, making substantive revisions of and, as necessary, reorganizing Yearbook chapter manuscripts on the basis of United Nations official documentation, additional research, and fact-checking to ensure established Yearbook guidelines and standards for accuracy, political balance, cohesion, completeness, conciseness and objectivity;

- Mentoring external Yearbook writers in applying Yearbook guidelines and maintaining Yearbook standards;

- Proofreading Yearbook proof pages and fact-checking, where necessary;

- Perform other editing and proofreading tasks, as needed.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in humanities, social science, communications or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as an editor and writer of academic or reference-type publications, involving digesting complex issues from multiple and diverse official sources, is required. At least two years of this experience must be with the United Nations or another similar international organization.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
