Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This position is located in the Ecosystems Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the overall supervision of the Coordinator and Head of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, the incumbent of the post will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

• Ensures implementation of information programs for Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonization and Institutional Reforms (SAPPHIRE), Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities (WIOSAP) and Nairobi Convention to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information and communication strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome;
• Monitors and analyse current events, public opinion and press, identify issues and trends, and advise the management (Project Coordinators of SAPPHIRE, WIOSAP projects and the Head of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat) on appropriate action/responses.
• Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan for SAPPHIRE, WIOSAP and Nairobi Convention related projects, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences or media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
• Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products for SAPPHIRE, WIOSAP and Nairobi Convention projects (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, radio spot program, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
• Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters relevant to the Western Indian Ocean region for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
• Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies in support of WIOSAP and SAPPHIRE projects and other Nairobi Convention projects and in the process of communication between UNEP, UNDP, Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties and other relevant stakeholders in the Nairobi Convention Area.
• Establishes and sustain professional relationships and linkages with specialized national, regional and international organizations involved in training, capacity building, and communication and information dissemination relevant to WIOSAP, SAPPHIRE and other related projects within the Nairobi Convention area.
• Collaborates with IT and Website staff in collecting and organising content for the WIOSAP and SAPPHIRE project websites, including the Nairobi Convention website and clearinghouse mechanism ensuring the websites are up to date.
• Undertake any other tasks as may be assigned to him/her in the field of his/her competence.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area at national and/or international levels is required. Previous work experience in one or more of the participating countries and/ or experience in the Western Indian Ocean Region is an asset. Demonstrated experience in communication and media releases of multi-disciplinary project is desirable. Familiarity with sustainable development and marine and coastal environmental issues in the Western Indian Ocean region is an advantage. Familiarity with the goals and procedures of international organizations particularly UNEP and UNDP is an added advantage. Excellent oral and written presentation skills with capacity to communicate effectively to different audiences is highly desirable. Good professional knowledge of main office computer applications is an asset.Proven experience and expertise in major publications software.

Languages

English and French are the working Languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and French is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
