Cadre organisationnel

The internship is in the Web Services Section of the News and Media Division of the Department of Public Information. The section is responsible for the design, development, maintenance and overall support of the UN's flagship public Internet website, www.un.org and many related sub sites that are managed by DPI.

The internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the division and availability of the candidate.

The internship is unpaid and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsabilités

Within limits of delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for the one or more of the following duties:


• Conduct research on the web on thematic issues, adapt content for the web by rewriting or translating content from English to another UN official languages.
• Assist in the updates of the web sites in websites in html, shtml, css or on Wordpress and/or Drupal.
• Drafting, formatting, editing and posting original web site content/news stories, including graphics, photos and videos.
• Edit (provide subtitles or audio) to existing videos or producing short videos from existing videos.
• Attend events in UN involving high level political leaders and celebrities, take pictures, videos and draft postings for various social media channels such as facebook, twitter, and weibo etc.
• Perform ad hoc tasks/projects as required.

Compétences

Professionalism:

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to handle a range of technical, internet and multimedia-related issues.
- Knowledge of the full range of communications and public information approaches, tools, and methodologies and applied multimedia communications and technology tools and techniques.
- Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges.
- Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
- Ability to write and edit in both English and native language (one of the five UN official languages) and good command of IT/web-related tools.
- Computer literate in standard software applications.
- Experience in the use of Adobe Creative Suite tools and familiar with web development programming and scripting languages, such as PHP, HTML5, CSS3 is desirable.
- Experience in web and news writing is desirable.
- Use of digital editing tools and experience in social media are a plus.

Formation

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a communications, information science, computer science, information systems, media studies, journalism, or related field graduate programme; or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a communications, information science, computer science, information systems, media studies, journalism, or related field bachelor's degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in communications, information science, computer science, information systems, media studies, journalism, or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. 2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Connaissances linguistiques

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required as well as fluency in oral and written one other official language of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish).
