Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in UNISFA Engineering Section, Abyei. The Engineering Technician at this level reports to the Chief Engineer through the Engineer.


•Within delegated authority, the Engineering Technician will be responsible for the following duties:

•Install, service, maintain and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, air-conditioning and refrigeration installations and electrical systems.

•Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems and related infrastructure installations.

•Operate a wide variety of tools and power equipment including saws, drills, common workshop machinery, voltage testers, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, welding/soldering equipment and other tools and equipment.
Perform diagnostics and preventive maintenance of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings and infrastructure.

•Perform technical or other assessments of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, buildings and infrastructure and prepare technical or other reports.
Maintain records relating to inventories, work orders and general correspondence.

•Apply and ensure adherence to safety programmes related to the safe operation of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, power tools and equipment of the building and maintenance trade.

•Conducting in-house training to tradesmen and artisans on the imaging technical skills in the new installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy.
Review and recommend for approval work orders and assign day to day repair and maintenance tasks to tradesmen and technicians being supervised.
•Coordinates and facilitates logistics support requirements for ongoing day to day tasks
•Liaises between the Engineering section and the Supply chain to ensure efficient and effective communication and coordination on material stock issues
•Acts as the focal point with clients for engineering to ensure timely responses to logistical issues

•Inspect and report maintenance work carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision, and ensure proper utilization of available resources
•Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for related works, installations and upgrade repair of infrastructure. Prepare bills of quantities and costing for projects. Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance.

•Assist in carrying out technical assessments of existing buildings and infrastructure.

•Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for HVAC/Electrical parts of infrastructure projects and maintenance programs. Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals if required

•Provide inputs periodically for assessment of performance levels of assigned local and international staff.
Alert the Supervisor of Unit / Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to occur.

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate in a trade (HVAC or electrical) is required.

Work Experience

At least six (6) years of relevant experience in construction project implementation in a private, commercial or military environment, installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems including at least 5 years in Engineering related areas and HVAC installation and maintenance. Experience in international operations in a post conflict environment is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN official language is an advantage.


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
