Org. Setting and Reporting

In 2007, the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) was established to provide this holistic approach to re-establishing systems of justice and reinforce security, through disarmament, demobilization and the reintegration of ex-combatants and through helping to deal with mine fields and unexplored ordinance that remain following armed struggles. OROLSI at the United Nations Headquarters brings together the Police Division, the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS), the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section (DDRS) and the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSR). The overarching goal of this Office is to support the work of United Nations missions to help national authorities consolidate lasting peace by establishing justice and security systems.

The Public Information and Graphic Design internship at the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for OROLSI is for an initial period of two months, with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Service. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Intern will be responsible for:

- Assist the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) with strategic communication and public outreach;
- Assist in developing graphic design and multimedia products for web and social networking platforms;
- Assist in developing content management and development of OROLSI stories and information to increase awareness and understanding of OROLSI issues by key audiences;
- Assist with drafting and editing OROLSI publications (e.g. fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and donor-related updates) for internal and external sources;
- Designing and producing OROLSI presentations and supporting materials to increase OROLSI visibility and outreach;
- Proactively contributing suggestions and ideas for design projects that will add value to OROLSI;
- Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Experience with design software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and literate in standard software applications (including Powerpoint, Excel and Word), Visio, Indesign and Dreamweaver is desirable. Experience with video creation is also desirable

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is required.
