Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Americas Division of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) with the Central America Team. The Americas Division leads efforts for the prevention of conflict, mediation and sustaining peace in the region. It is responsible for the delivery of the Department of Political Affair’s strategic priorities with regard to the countries, as well as regional and sub-regional organizations, in the Western Hemisphere. The Political Affairs Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Team Leader for Central America.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Reviews and monitors activities in the country or countries assigned; assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues and recommends solutions/possible action by the United Nations.
• Monitors national and regional level political developments in the area of assignment and provides analyses and advice to senior Secretariat officials and/or UN agencies active on the ground.
• Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
• Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
• Conducts research; supports the preparation of, non-papers, background papers, analytical briefings, mediation proposals, reports and other documents.
• Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region.
• Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
• Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
• Carries out, in consultation with the supervisor, administrative functions relating to staff planning and budget.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, law or related field. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area. Experience in providing substantive support for good offices and mediation is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of French is an desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
