This internship is located with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), Department of Management (DM). The internship is for a minimum of four months but preferably six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Examples of duties to be performed may include the following:
• Planning, documenting, and communicating phases of software development project;
• Training and educating clients on related IT topics;
• Drafting in power point presentations for different audiences;
• Analyzing IT statistics;
• Preparing operational reports;
• Preparing management reports;
• Attending and supporting the preparation of meetings, conferences, workshops and other events;
• Taking notes during meetings and creating the meeting minutes;
• Additional activities that may be required to ensure the success of the work .

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1. Applicants are required to:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Information Science, Information Systems, or related field.
b. Or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); in Information Science, Information Systems, or related field.
c. Or have graduated with a university degree as defined in (a) and (b) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
d. If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of fulltime
studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an Information Science, Information Systems or related degree.
2. Be proficient in standard office automation equipment (e.g. computer, scanner, printer, etc.) and software systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows 7 or similar; Microsoft Office or similar; Lotus Notes or similar, etc.)
3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
4. And have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme however, knowledge of the following would be desirable:
• SQL*Server databases (or similar, e.g. Oracle, Sybase, etc.)
• Coding triggers, functions and packages in SQL
• Database design
• Data warehousing
• BI Tools (e.g. SAP Business Objects, Oracle OBIEE, Qlik, etc.)
• Business Analysis
• IT Service Management (ITIL Foundation)
• Microsoft Visio
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
