Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), adopted by the international community at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in 2012, aims to support regional and national initiatives on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and scale up the implementation of SCP practices with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The implementation of the 10YFP is now recognized as a key implementation mechanism of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its implementation forms the first target under Sustainable Development Goal 12 of that agenda. UN Environment is serving as the Secretariat of the 10YFP, which is located in the Economy Division (www.unep.org/10yfp).

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 - 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Secretariat for the 10YFP, the intern will assist in a variety of tasks relating to communication, outreach and fundraising for the 10YFP. This can include supporting research and mapping activities as well as the development information/communication tools and raising awareness on SCP and the 10YFP among different stakeholder groups (governments, business, NGOs, academics, etc.). Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Knowledge of social media marketing, graphic design and video editing are considered strong assets.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
-Support to the implementation of the 10YFP communications and resource mobilization strategies
-Design and develop informational tools relating to SCP and the 10YFP
-Undertake desktop research for outreach activities
-Complete mapping exercises for resource mobilization and coordination purposes
-Support the development of Newsletters and updates
-Support the organization of events
-Draft articles and posts for newsletters and social networks
-Attend meetings, take notes, and follow up on action items
-Respond to ad hoc requests for support

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Have a Masters in Communications, Political science, Economics or Environmental related topics

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
