Org. Setting and Reporting

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.

This announcement broadcasts international internship opportunities situated within the National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms, and Civil Society Section (NRCS). of the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD).

OHCHR's cooperation with civil society remains a strategic priority because it bolsters our shared objectives, helps to address our mutual concerns, and supports the Office’s human rights mission and initiatives. OHCHR, though NRCS is dedicated to strengthening cooperation with civil society actors and OHCHR, encourages their engagement with United Nations human rights mechanisms and is dedicated to protecting civil society space.

The Section supports the establishment and strengthening of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and works closely with NHRIs to support them in the implementation of their broad mandates to promote and protect human rights. NHRIs perform core protection issues, such as the prevention of torture and degrading treatment, summary executions, arbitrary detention and disappearances, or the protection of human rights defenders. NHRIs also play a role in advancing all aspects of the rule of law, including with regard to the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and the correctional system. NHRIs also contribute to effective Parliaments (ideally with a Human Rights body), strong and dynamic civil society organizations, alert and responsive media, a school system with human rights education programmes at all levels and, generally, a society encouraging the objective of a universal culture of human rights. Under the general guidance of the Chief of Section, the intern reports to a Human Rights Officer within the area of assignment

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, this internship is normally offered for an initial period of three (3) months, with possibility of extension up to a total period of six (6) months, ranging/starting from June to December 2018.

Responsibilities

The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.

In general, daily responsibilities of interns supporting NCRS will depend on the individual's background and duties may include but are not limited to assisting in facilitating the mainstreaming of the work on National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), as set out in the High Commissioner's priority due to the level of work aims and objectives; Assisting in functions related to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights (GANHRI) and its Sub-Committee on Accreditation web-page; Assisting in research regarding NHRIs functions and practices; Assisting in the organization and implementation of seminars, workshops and/or training activities on NHRIs at the national, regional or global levels, as directed; and Assisting in the preparation of training and information materials concerning NHRIs.

In addition to the specific responsibilities outlined above, the intern assists in supporting a variety of initiatives aimed at further strengthening the relationship between OHCHR and civil society actors; Provides assistance throughout the sessions of the Human Rights Council (HRC) and its mechanisms and mandates i.e. Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Advisory Committee and Social Forum. Working within the Council Secretariat - operating out of Palais des Nations - for the duration of the session, the intern facilitates access of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to the HRC, processing written statements, access to speakers lists, the holding of NGOs' parallel events; Attends parallel NGO events; Prepares summaries accordingly, and Provides guidance to NGO participants; Assists in responding to daily requests and correspondence addressed to the Civil Society Unit's e-mail address; Contributes to the systematization of the responses given and analyzes trends and the most common requests; Assists in implementing the Section's work plan throughout the internship; and Performs other tasks as directed by the Chief of Section or supervisor.

Education

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship within one-year period from the date of graduation.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme though any relevant academic and/or practical experience, in particular in the area of legal or human rights affairs, would be an advantage.

Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English or French is required and knowledge of the other is an asset. Knowledge of another United Nations official language – i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish, would be an advantage.
