Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located at the Carpentry Shop, Alteration and Construction Projects Unit (ACPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD), Office of Central Support Services, Department of Management. The incumbent reports directly to the Foreman of the Shop and also reports to the General Foreman of the Unit.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the General Foreman, Construction and Alteration Projects Unit and direct supervision of Foreman of the Carpentry Shop, Plant Engineering Section, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

Construct, repair and maintain of wooden cabinets, furniture;
Design and fabrication of special gift boxes;
Repair delicate gifts and artwork;
Mount and frame maps, pictures and bulletin boards;
Discuss and co-ordinate with General Foreman and Foreman for assigned works;
Use all hand and power tools pertaining to the carpentry trade;
Prepare requisitions for materials and supplies as necessary;
Review work orders received via computer and assign them to journeyman and junior journeyman;
Keep record of time and materials used on assignments and prepare periodic reports as necessary;
Oversee the contractor’s work to ensure work is complete as required standards;
Supervise daily operations of the Carpentry shop including staff, in the absence of the Foreman,
Perform other duties as required.

Education

High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of experience as a skilled carpenter is required. Experience as a supervisor is desirable. Experience in the construction trades is desirable. Experience with fine carpentry, such as furniture or cabinet making is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
