Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and reports to the Head of Translation and Interpretation Unit in the Office of the Chief of Staff (O/COS).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Translator will be responsible for the following duties:

• Provides simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during meetings of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Deputy SRSGs and other UNAMI officials.

• Arabic Interpreters provide interpretation from Arabic into English and vice-versa of speeches and other statements by UNAMI officials and their interlocutors.

• May occasionally be assigned to sensitive meetings.

• May function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.

• May perform other related duties, as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in law, public administration, conference management or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of internationally recognized professional translation and interpretation experience in an international organization, non-governmental organization, or within the United Nations common system (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programs).

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate's one of the primary languages, is required. Excellent command of English is required. Other UN official languages would be an asset.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
