Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the New York Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) with the Strategic Communications Branch. The incumbent will report to a Public Information Officer/ Information Management Officer and the Branch Chief. The Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) is OCHA's communications and public advocacy team that supports OCHA headquarters and field operations in public outreach on humanitarian action. SCB supports the strategic direction of OCHA's public advocacy and communications efforts, providing cutting edge products and services. The OCHA Internship is for a minimum duration of two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months.


The Branch coordinates communications and advocacy with humanitarian partners and brokers new partnerships for innovative advocacy opportunities. SCB does this through three teams working on news and media relations, design and multimedia, and public advocacy and campaigns. In consultation with a Public Information Officer or Information Management Officer within the Branch, the intern will be responsible for:

Campaigns and Social Media
*Support global campaigns; attend creative meetings, draft internal and external communications documents, research and manage celebrity, influencer and PR contact lists and assist in outreach efforts, collates campaign coverage, presentations, and reporting, assists in event management
*Graphic design support for campaigns, and the online digital activist group the Messengers of Humanity and its Tumblr community.
*Research social media analytics.

Film and Photo
*Organize the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conduct photo and graphic research.
*Assist and participate in image selection for public dissemination. Provide metadata for captioning and archiving purposes. Monitor multimedia developments.
*Assist in video editing campaign materials.

Visual Information
*Design clear engaging graphic communications for print and web. This will include logos, branded promotional materials, web site and social media graphics, posters, flyers, publication layout and other marketing materials as needed. The intern will support the Design & Multimedia team on all projects and have the opportunity to see a project evolve from the concept phase to final production and publication.

Media and Speeches
*Support the global Spokesperson's daily media work by following and capturing key public briefings, maintaining international media database and lists, ensuring appropriate distribution and posting of key public materials, and providing feedback to OAD on their input to the UN noon briefing and media engagements.
*Support key speeches and missions by senior officials, including by maintaining daily action checklists and inputs for HQ news; research; and end of mission media and social media summaries.
*Maintain calendar of key media events and opportunities, arrange support to OCHA media outreach and major events in coordination with other OCHA and UN bodies.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme; however, any practical and academic experience on humanitarian issues including humanitarian financing mechanisms, humanitarian funding trends, gender equality programming is desirable. Research interest and published work on these or/and any related areas is desirable. Interest and skills in film, photo and multimedia tools is desirable. Experience in social media and graphic design programs such as InDesign is an asset. Strong computer skills, proficiency in using advanced functions on Mac standard and relevant specialized computer applications (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, After Effects, Acrobat, and other software applications) is desirable. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and Excel is desirable. Good graphic design skills and demonstrated ability to independently design and produce high-quality graphic materials for varied print and digital media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits; web pages, publication layout, etc). Ability to handle multiple design projects simultaneously.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN Official language is an advantage.

Administrative requirements:

The internship is unpaid and fulltime. The general working hours at United Nations Headquarters New York are 40 hours per week, from 9:00 to 5:00 pm with one hour for a lunch break.

All costs associated to the internship are to be borne by the intern, specifically: travel, visas, accommodation/living expenses and medical insurance for the entire duration of the internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship.
