Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Development Business Unit, Sales and Marketing Section, Outreach Division in the Department of Public Information. Sales and Marketing Section works to promote the United Nations' knowledge, communication, and outreach objectives by publishing, selling, distributing, and licensing print and electronic publications, periodicals and databases that disseminate the United Nations' knowledge, studies, and data. It publishes titles aimed at a broad public, as well as electronic products and services for individual readers and institutions. Development Business is the official online publication to access daily procurement notices and contract awards from partners at multilateral development banks, national governments, the United Nations' agencies and more. Development Business delivers timely and consolidated information on contract opportunities in the developing world to its global audience. Access is available through paid subscription for the private and public sector. Development Business collaborates actively with regional entities and organizations with local expertise. Through the establishment of cross-promotional arrangements, it seeks to multiply its outreach effectiveness and offer valuable networking opportunities to its subscribers. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Unit.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Development Business Unit, the Sales/Marketing Assistant is responsible for the following duties:

Promotion/Marketing
• Conceptualizes and drafts content and graphic material for varied print and electronic media projects and post through different marketing channels, including advertising, direct mail, Internet, e-mail and social media.
• Prepares and coordinates inclusion of new material in the website; converts documents into HTML; prepares and incorporates graphics as needed using Photoshop or other graphic design software; uploads new promotional material to appropriate directories using FTP.
• Coordinates elements of annual marketing plan in such areas as direct mail/email, advertising, exhibit, book review and other related programmes; provides schedule and cost estimates and liaises with vendors.
• Assists in the development of questionnaire surveys and the analysis of the results and coordinates market research and related activities.

Sales/Customer Support
• Handles account management system; takes action on credit applications, opening of accounts for new customers and renewal of existing accounts. Monitors and reviews inquiries and feedbacks; prepares relevant communications. Monitors status of accounts, investigates discrepancies and initiates action of correcting inconsistencies; identifies issues and recommends actions to supervisor on problem accounts. Maintains databases by entering and updating subscription related data.
• Accepts and processes subscription and licensing requests; coordinates and follows-up with relevant units to ensure timely provision of on-line access and communicates with the subscriber or licensee; sends renewals notices/invoices, reminders; responds to questions on status of subscription requests.

Other
• Provides administrative support; verifies invoices for payment; processes, drafts and finalizes correspondence and other communications; sets up and maintains files/records; monitors deadlines.
• Provides periodic reports on the above responsibilities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to manage relationship with clients. Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in sales, marketing, publishing, advertising, promotional activities or related area is required. Experience in digital marketing and social media analytics is required. Experience in database management and website maintenance is desirable. Experience with e-commerce and customer relationship management systems is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
