Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship position is located in the Office of the Chief of Staff in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and is for two months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. The internship is unpaid and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Department.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
-Working on a project to develop the action plan for the Departmental Gender Strategy
-Working on a project to collect improved data on a range of gender related areas.
-Coordinating and assisting with specific OCOS events.
-Other ad hoc duties as assigned.

Competencies

Professionalism: Computer literate including in applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to learn fast and communicate effectively. Ability to work well with data. Ability to apply evaluative skills and conduct independent research and analysis, including providing recommendations as required. Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments. Adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary, and uses time efficiently.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise. Is willing to learn from others. Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Education

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Or (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Or (c) Have graduated with a university degree, as defined in (a) and (b) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme. Applicants are expected to be computer literate in standard software applications. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to successfully work and interact in a multi-cultural environment.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
