Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON performs representation functions with permanent missions, the host government and governmental and non-governmental organizations in Nairobi. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in Facilities Management and Transportation Section (FMTS), Central Support Services, Division of Administrative Services, UNON.

Within delegated authority, the Engineer will apply professional engineering knowledge and expertise in performance of the following duties:

Responsibilities

- Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings, waste disposal systems, , water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, and other related structures and activities..
- Plans and designs specifications for projects.
- Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
- Prepares design layout for smaller or less complex portions of buildings and facilities.
- Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications.
- Estimates costs of resource efficient retrofits of existing buildings, facilities and systems to determine feasibility of retrofits or replacement.
- Prepares construction and related documents, such as bills of quantities, drawings sufficient for tender out of construction works.
- Liaises with other engineers and facilities specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data.
- Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques.
- Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned projects.
- Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources.
- Prepares reports for management on progress and matters of a technical nature.
- Conducts research on development of new technical systems, and follow development to identify improved methods and equipment.
- Coordinates implementation and manages the (environmental management system) EMS and related external certification.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned.

- Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honours commitments; Delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards; Operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules; Supports subordinates, provides oversight and takes responsibility for delegated assignments; Takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in engineering or another related field, is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related field. Proven track record with planning, coordination and management of engineering projects with specific focus on utilities, such as, power, water, waste water and waste services, is required. Proven track record with environmental upgrade or retrofit projects is required. Practical experience with planning, coordination and implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) and or with an environmentally certified building is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this position is for a period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staffs are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
