Cadre organisationnel

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.
Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.

ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

This internship is located within the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

The intern reports directly to the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support

Responsabilités

The intern will be supporting the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary substantively and administratively and will be responsible for carrying out the following:

1- Assist in conducting substantive policy research and reviews related to the work of the Office;
2- Prepare background notes, talking points and policy briefs for the meetings, missions and other events attended by Office staff;
3- Research, draft and update country profiles and other background in preparation for high-level meetings and other events;
4- Attend and take notes at meetings, conferences and other events; assist in the preparation of summaries and reports of discussions;
5- Assist in other ad-hoc activities as instructed.

Formation

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme:
1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher).
2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent.); or
3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 1 and 2 above) and, if selected must commence the internship within one year period of graduation.
4. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s programme of work and administration. For this post, enrolment in at least the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in the following areas: Political Science, Economics, Social Sciences, Public Policy.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
