Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Social Media Section of the Digital and Promotion Branch in the News and Media Division, Department of Public Information (DPI). The Section is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the multilingual social media strategy of the Department, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging and as guided by administrative policies on the institutional use of social media. The incumbents will report to directly to the Chief of Section.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Social Media Section, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

•Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events on social media, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
•Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
•Undertakes activities to promote social media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a social media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, disseminating materials and consulting with thematic experts on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
•Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types of information communications products which could include, but not limited to social media posts, video for social media, blogs and tweets, etc., manages publication of information communication products to third party social media platforms, to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
•Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies.
•Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
•Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
•Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff and interns.

Knowledge on how to Identify and prepares new material for inclusion on appropriate social media accounts and other online outlets as well as updating, drafting and editing content on social media accounts and other online official outlets. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; Ability to work accurately and under pressure in a small team. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work; Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; Remains calm in stressful situations.

•MANAGING PERFORMANCE: Delegates the appropriate responsibility, accountability and decision-making authority; makes sure that roles, responsibilities and reporting lines are clear to each staff member; accurately judges the amount of time and resources needed to accomplish a task and matches task to skills; monitors progress against milestones and deadlines; Regularly discusses performance and provides feedback and coaching to staff; encourages risk-taking and supports creativity and initiative; actively supports the development and career aspirations of staff; appraises performance fairly.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience managing social media platforms in Arabic with global audiences in a professional communications context is required. Experience producing live, audio and video multimedia products for social media platforms is desirable. Experience serving as a thematic communications focal point is desirable.

Languages

English or French are the main working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
