Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is positioned in the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, located at Beirut (Yarze), Lebanon. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Political Unit and liaises closely with members of UNSCOL's political, media and other substantive units.

The intern is required to work the equivalent of a minimum of at least two months on a full-time basis in order to receive recognition of service as an intern. Flexible working arrangements can be agreed with the receiving office. An internship under such arrangements must be completed within a six-month period.

Responsibilities

The intern will provide support for the Mission’s Political Unit activities, according to a work plan and delivery schedule which will include, but are not limited to the following elements:

- Conduct research and compile information on selected issues relevant to Lebanon and the Middle East region.
- Assist in the drafting of geographical and thematic fact sheets.
- Assist in the compilation of presentations, papers and other documents as required.
- Assist in the monitoring of local, regional and international media, including social media.
- Assist in the preparation and organization of events and outreach activities.
- Attend conferences, workshops and other relevant public events as an observer and report back to UNSCOL.
- Translate media items and other documents from Arabic to English or English to Arabic
- Support members of UNSCOL’s front office, media and coordination teams on specific tasks, as requested
- Archiving and other administrative functions.
- Perform any other duties as requested

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

Field of study to be preferably in Political Studies, Journalism, International Relations, Law or a related field;

Be computer literate in standard software applications;

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views,

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Internship Programme. Strong skills in using Microsoft software packages and social media platforms will be an asset.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Arabic or French would be an asset.

The United Nations does not remunerate interns in any way. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, health insurance, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns will not be entitled to any compensation for travel arrangements to and from the work location. Interns do not receive a salary or emoluments from the United Nations.

UNSCOL accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service

Interns may not apply for or be appointed to any position in the Professional or above categories and for positions at the FS-6 and FS-7 levels in the Field Service category during the period of their internship and for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof.

A person who is the child, stepchild, sibling, and stepsibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations.
