Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is located in Montreal and is administered by UN Environment. This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the supervision of the Head of the Economic Policy and Resource Mobilization Unit.

The Economics and Finance Programme Support Internship is for a duration of three (3) months with a possibility of an extension depending on the needs of the Organization.

The Internship is UNPAID and full time.

Interns work five days per week (35 to 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the head, Economic Policy and Resource Mobilization Unit and in close coordination with the programme officer on business engagement and other substantive programme officers of the unit, as well as colleagues from communications, knowledge management and IT units, the intern will provide support to the delivery of the work on the unit pertaining to economics and finance issues including engagement with businesses and biodiversity and development cooperation. Tasks may include in particular:
•Assist in the preparation of the Forum on Business and Biodiversity in parallel to the ministerial segment of CBD COP-14, a unique global event bringing together global business leaders with high-level representatives of governments and civil society to engage in a dialogue on incorporating ecosystem and biodiversity considerations in business models and operations;
•Assist in providing secretariat services to the Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity, a global network of 21 national and regional partnership initiatives;
•Assist in aggregating and analyzing economic and financial data provided by governments, reporting on the implementation of the targets for resource mobilization adopted by COP-12;
•Review and further develop the web presence of the programmes under the responsibility of the unit, and analyze, review and update the existing record of knowledge products, with a view to streamline knowledge management and enhanced database use;
•Assist in the preparation and dissemination of pertinent outreach products, including on business engagement and the role of biodiversity for the implementation of the 2030 sustainable development agenda and the sustainable development goals;
•ToR may be further specified in accordance with emerging needs of the unit as well as the personal interests and qualifications of the candidate.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Graduate (or higher) student in a pertinent field (e.g., economics and finance; international development environmental sciences with emphasis on economics and finance); familiarity with IT-based knowledge management a strong asset

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required, knowledge of Spanish is desirable
